View Full Version : Converting from 8-bit to 16-bit
How do I convert music files from 8-bit to 16-bit? I recorded about 10 files from GBA megaman Battle Network 2, trying to put them onto a cd to listen to, but when I try to send them onto the cd, it says it need to be at least 16-bit.

I'm fairly sure that when you rip the music from the game file, there should be a way to save it as a 16-bit file. Else, if it's a wav, you should be able to convert it with sound recorder. I'll fiddle around with it and see what I can come up with.
One of the music people (Deci, Beld, Hermit) might probably know more about it.. Hopefully, they'll see this.
Edit - Yep. If it's a wav, open it in Sound Recorder. (Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment in Win98) Once it opens, click file, then save as. On the bottom of the dialog box, below "Save as type" there should be a format area. Click change, and select a 16-bit format from the attributes drop down menu. Then click ok, and save the wav under the new format.

Can you record it in 16-bit to begin with? That would give you the best sound quality.

Kudos to Teilyr ;)
Recording straight to 16-bit would be ideal. Converting from 8-bit may produce some static and, of course, will have less quality in it than what you'd get from going straight to 16-bit. But if you don't really care that much about that, it's not that big a deal ;)

FYI, converting from 8 bit to 16bit will give no quality upgrade. You need to record from the source at 16bit if you want better quality audio.

If I'm right, you Using VBA (visual boy advance). Hidden in the menu's somewhere, I'm pretty sure you can select 16-bit output mode. If your not using VBA, I suggest you try it as I'm pretty sure you can save straight as 16-bit. :)
